Sumertime, the livin's easy...
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

This week had summertime written all over it- sunscreen, sweaty curls and dips in the pool. We had a great weekend attending a beautiful wedding on Saturday and celebrating a neighborhood buddy's fourth birthday on Sunday.

Avery outgrew his baby pool from last summer so we upgraded to a new one this week that has a padded bottom (the perfect trick to entice Avery to lie down in it!) I snapped this photo as he kicked back for the first time and he was so proud of himself he gave me some pretty stellar smiles :) With Avery's impending birthday only a few days away, this will be his last photo as a one-year-old! *gasp!*

I haven't had a chance to share many of our photos from our Wisconsin trip last week, but here's a fun video of Avery dunking his face in the bath for the first time EVER, to the roar of his very enthusiastic crowd (sometimes all he needs is an audience to get him to try new things!)

"Grandpa's Tractor!"
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

Memorial Day weekend turned out to be a most exciting one for our family. We made an impromptu trip to Wisconsin to celebrate both of my sisters' graduations - one from high school and one from college! It was a surprise to everyone (except my brother - he was our sneaky 'insider'!) which made it extra exciting. It was our first big trip as a family of four and although it didn't come without its challenges and stressful moments, it was well worth it to spend a beautiful weekend with some of the people we love the most.

We spent most of the day Sunday on grandpa and grandma's farm and Avery got some quality time with some of his favorites: tractors, cows, cousins, and wide open spaces. Welcome summertime!

"Avery too?"
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

Avery shares his portrait this week with his brother, but in a totally unplanned way. This photo is significant because it's the first portrait that Avery chose for himself. I was taking Cullen's weekly photo on Wednesday and usually Avery just stands by and watches as I tickle Cullen and make funny faces, but this week he laid down next to his little brother in this cute position, looked at me and asked, "Avery too?" Yes, my boy who I was just saying last week avoids my camera like the plague ASKED to have his picture taken. And apparently this is his posed 'smile' :)

Oh, how I love this boy. And how he refers to himself in the third person :)

The older Cullen gets, the more I'm convinced we have a little Avery-clone on our hands - thighs and all :)

In other news, our neighbors next door were kind enough to pass along the plastic playset that their children have outgrown. It's sun-faded and well used, but after a pressure washing Avery has been having a blast mastering its tunnels and slides. These plastic structures are solid and last forever! The jury is still out on if we will brighten it up with paint. For now, it's a huge hit just the way it is. :)  "Hands-up!"

Cullen @ 2 Months!

It is SO true what they say - baby #2 just GROWS FASTER! I can't believe how time is flying and to top it off, I'm pretty sure Cullen is growing at an astronomically fast pace - even faster than his chunky-monkey big brother! Those CHEEKS, and those THIGHS! No wonder I want to squeeze him all day - who could resist?!  Needless to say, Cullen's appetite continues to be healthy, he weighed in today at 15 pounds, 2 ounces - in the 97th percentile for height and weight (which explains why I've already had to crack open the box of 6 month clothes...)

Cullen finally began enjoying taking baths in the infant tub. I had to sponge bathe him for his first 5 weeks because he wanted nothing to do with the tub but now he LOVES it and bathtime usually lasts about 30 minutes because he's so relaxed in the water I don't want to take him out.

These two photos were literally taken one right after the other on my
camera - wow, what a couple of seconds and a sweet smile can do!
Avery and Cullen are still in sleep-sync (*cue the heavenly choirs*) and I've even been able to put Cullen down in his baby swing to nap a handful of times and had a couple of hands-free hours to myself (!) Since I was never quite sure how long this scenario would last, I didn't want to get into any projects that I couldn't put down easily so what did I do? Dishes. Or laundry. I have clearly forgotten what to do with my idle self. *sigh* ...better luck next month.

Cullen started SMILING!!  This has got to be one of the most exciting baby 'milestones' ever. These first baby smiles light up my life and since Cullen wears a super-serious pout 90% of the time, his face completely transforms when he smiles. I'm officially 'that lady' in the grocery store that halts my cart in the middle of the isle to make ridiculous faces and coos that will hopefully earn me another sweet baby grin. Don't judge. You'd do it too ;)

Cullen now takes a soothie pacifier for short periods of time. It works wonders if we're in the store
and I just need another 10-15 minutes before we can make it out to the car to nurse (yes, I have ventured out shopping with the two boys alone - most of the experiences have been good ones)  or we're in the car (Cullen does not like to be in his carseat for any length of time).

I wear Cullen in a front sling many times a week. Either to go on a walk or just hang outside with Avery, it's nice to be able to tote him around and be hands-free. Plus, Cullen loves being all snuggled in and usually snoozes the whole time.

Cullen's tear ducts are slowly starting to open up and do their job- his right eye is now
draining normally, but his left eye is still a bit gunky. Hopefully by the end of next month they will both be clear and working like they should.

Cullen is sleeping 5-7 hour stretches at night!
When he does wake up, Justin calls him 'daddy's lambo' (Yelawolf anyone? ...No?) because he goes from 0-60. He's either screaming or sleeping, no in-between.  :)

Cullen remains a pretty cool cat most of the day. He is so observant and when he's awake he wants to be held upright and facing out so he can see what's going on around him. His fussiest time is in the evenings between dinner and bedtime and he prefers to either nurse or be in motion during this time, which is fine with me as he gets good and tanked up and then usually snuggles in until 3 or 4 in the morning.

Avery continues to love on his brother; sharing toys, reading books and showing off his tricks. Cullen loves to follow Avery with his eyes and encourages him by giving lots of smiles and coos. :) SO many sweet moments between these two brothers.

Cullen went on his first bike ride! We rigged up his car seat in the bike trailer and I towed him while Avery got a new seat on dad's bike. I'm SO excited that it's biking season again (and that Cullen enjoys it)- it's one of our favorite family activities!
I think as Cullen packs on the pounds, he looks more and more like Avery did as a baby, don't you think?
Cullen at 7 weeks on the left, Avery at 9 weeks on the right

Baby's first ball pit :)

And a couple of videos of brotherly love in action:
Avery loves to be involved in Cullen's tummy-time and is always pulling out new toys and showing his little bro how they work:

Every day when Avery wakes up from his nap, his first stop is to find Cullen (who is usually still sleeping) and smother him in kisses. He thinks everything Cullen does is hilarious (his burps, his head-bobs, his 'toots', his bubbles, etc. He's also got a way of 'accidentally' waking him up by yelling "Awake!" every time Cullen shifts in his sleep. Bless his heart for being so excited about everything his little brother does (and bless Cullen's little heart for being such a sound sleeper)

Sunglasses and pruney feet: we've been waiting too long for days like this!
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"
Finally. We spent most of our day on Thursday outside in the hot sun. We played in the pool, filled up some water balloons, and thoroughly enjoyed our first 'summer weather' of the year. Mom got a sunburn and Avery was ready for bed early, It was a beautiful thing.

Avery continues to be a stinker when it comes to having his photo taken. The second he realizes that I've got my camera he stops what he's doing and runs away yelling, "No! Stop!" so I have to time my approach very carefully. (I often wonder how I ruined him wanting to have his picture taken... he used to be the most willing subject!) There were many moments this week that I wanted to capture so badly knowing they would make a great portrait, but for fear of ruining the moment I left the camera in the bag. Thankfully I tricked him with this cute pool shot - the boy LOVES to wear his sunglasses all day (and night!) and I think they're so perfect for his little boy face :)

In other news: the new house across the street is taking shape and Avery is still pretty enthralled with the whole process. Construction has gotten much more 'noisy' now, but I'm thankful to have such a good napper who isn't phased by the constant hammering one bit. I love this shot because the perspective makes my big boy look oh-so-small as he contently watches.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! What a crazy, beautiful, amazing thing motherhood is. It is certainly the hardest thing I've ever done, but it is such a blessing and a privilege to have two sweet boys that call me mama.

These two.
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

Never was there a boy who adored his daddy quite as much as Avery does Justin. These two are inseparable and everything Justin does is exciting to Avery - everything. Justin's morning routine is never a solitary one and every morning Avery insists on putting his own contacts in, applying deoderant and cologne, and gelling his hair right alongside dad. He comes downstairs feeling so proud, looking like Edward Scissorhands and smelling like a man on the prowl ;)

Justin worked long days all week, not getting home until after bedtime, which meant Avery only got to see him for a couple of hours in the morning. Naturally, they made the most of their short time together and Avery was glued to Justin's side while he got ready. Avery was a riot when dad hooked him up with some shaving cream but when the actual 'shaving' began, he was all business - he took this new experience VERY seriously.

I came to a hard realization this past week that no matter how cool I am (and I can be pretty cool;), I will never be as cool as Justin is in the eyes of our boys. And that's ok. I'm so grateful to have chosen an amazing partner that is such a strong teacher and role model - he's got patience and love for miles.
And Avery's got him wrapped around his little finger.
:)

On a side note, it also dawned on me this week that my baby boy will be two in just over a month. TWO. How did that HAPPEN?! I shall commence party planning to avoid thinking about the fact that 24 whole months have almost passed... in the blink of an eye...it's getting real over here, people.

Avery on the Farm

"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

On Saturday, we took a trip to the farm at Prophetstown State Park. We had visited the farm once before Avery was born, but this was his first trip (The first of many, I'm sure, since we only live 2 miles away!) and although it's still pretty early in the season for the farm, we had a great time wandering around checking out the animals and watching some huge horses plowing up the fields. Avery was pretty excited about the chickens, cows and horses... from afar. Once they got too close, he wanted nothing to do with them and quickly retreated to the safety of dad's arms. The one animal he did warm up to? The friendly barn cat. Thanks for being so tolerant of curious little boys, dear cat.

**Happy Birthday to my amazing husband and Avery & Cullen's world-class daddy!! Here's to another year of adventure!**

Brothers

For us, Easter Sunday consisted of spending as much time outside in the sunshine as possible. It was a really great low-key day spent with my three favorite guys. Dinner on the patio made for some pretty photo-worthy moments between these two sweet brothers.  Avery couldn't get enough kisses and hugs from Cullen, who is  getting so strong and holds his head up to watch everything going on around him. I'm looking forward to watching these two interact more in the months to come.

And check out Avery's bottom row of teeth all filled out!

Baby Charlie
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

When Cullen was born, Avery received his very own baby (lovingly named 'baby Charlie') from his grandma and grandpa Stewart. Some days baby Charlie never leaves his cradle but other days Avery is a doting caretaker who is very aware of what baby Charlie is doing all day and diligently feeds, burps and wraps Charlie in blankets. It makes my heart smile to see how caring and gentle he is with his own little baby, just as he is with his baby brother (thankfully, baby Charlie is proving to be much more durable than baby Cullen).

I get a chuckle out of the cute and funny places Avery fondly tucks baby Charlie away for his 'naps' - like amongst our shoes on a shelf by the door or under an ottoman - always wrapped up head to toe like a mummy. Oh, my heart :)

How lucky we were to have uncle Josh and grandma and grandpa Wachsmuth here with us this past week - Avery was one happy little boy, so blessed to have so many amazing people in his life!

A construction site front-row-seat
"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

They broke ground this week on two new houses right across the street from us. The noise and traffic threaten to drive me crazy but this noise and traffic are exactly what excite Avery the most and because I'm grateful for the free entertainment without having to leave home, I welcome the building crews.

It's been getting warmer, especially in the afternoons, so we are able to get outside (halleluiah, fresh air!) but this morning was still a bit too cool so Avery spent hours glued to the windows, studying the workers so intently. What a fun thing for my vehicle/machinery loving boy to watch up close!

Our neighborhood has never been so exciting!!  As icing on the cake,
a huge fire truck roared by as I was snapping photos :)
We've been enjoying lots of time with family this week, Avery is in heaven :)

Cullen at One Month!

Time is flying by over here. How this little peanut is four weeks old already is beyond me. At his 2 week appointment, he weighed 10 lbs, 3 oz (That's a whopping 1 lb, 9 oz more than his birthweight!) and has only gotten bigger since (he carries the majority of his weight in those cheeks!)

Cullen is one of the most chill babies I've ever known. I truly didn't think Avery was all that fussy as a newbie but seeing how calm Cullen is, perhaps I was mistaken! (Good thing Avery came first and I didn't know any better!) During the day, Cullen is completely content being held, lying in his swing or stretching out on the floor. No daytime swaddling necessary for this cool dude!

Cullen has had clogged tear ducts in his eyes since he was born. During the day they aren't too bad as I can wipe them frequently but when he wakes up in the morning or after a nap, they are pretty crusty and he isn't too fond of me digging around in them to clean them out...

He's an efficient little eater; unlike Avery, whom I would consider a 'marathon man' when it came to nursing, Cullen fills up quickly and continues on with his day (a 'sprinter' for sure). At night, he wakes up hungry 3 or 4 times but after a diaper change and a quick feeding, he's back in a deep sleep and I'm usually back to bed within 20 minutes. It's glorious!
Cullen is also very good about enjoying his meals on-the-go. Many of his feedings during the day are interrupted by Avery's 'urgent' need for a snack or Play-Doh.

I told Cullen when he was in my tummy that he would have to be pretty tolerant and able to go-with-the-flow in order to survive around here with an such an active big brother and thankfully he took my advice. He doesn't get worked up about much including the noise, constant kisses and squeezes, and 'sharing' (a.k.a., being buried in toys) that comes along with having a big bro like Avery. (I'm sure the 'getting worked up' part will come in good time :)
Our family was hit hard with a nasty stomach bug this past week and I think I can now safely say that Cullen is the only one that was spared (Thank goodness for all those awesome breastmilk antibodies!) After being sick myself, I prayed that poor tiny Cullen wouldn't have to suffer like that and am so thankful to say he's healthy as can be.

Miraculously, both boys are currently on the same sleep schedule. (why I speak these words out loud, I don't know...) When Avery goes down for
his nap, Cullen also takes a 2-3 hour snooze. He takes this snooze on my chest, which I fully embrace and use as my 'excuse' to nap as well ;) It's a nice little alone time with my sweet snuggly babe (whom I can watch growing bigger and bigger by the minute), but I obviously get nothing done during this time. Oh well, I know all too well that this phase will not last so I'm taking advantage of the down time while I can!
At night, when Avery goes to bed around 8/8:30, Cullen is ready to fill his tank and turn in as well. It's sort of surreal to have some time in the evening to spend lounging with Justin as our boys are both snuggled in their beds sleeping. I wasn't expecting this scenario for months!

He's so strong!
He can hold his own head up to look around and even enjoys tummy time (for about 15 minutes). He's also so serious! I know it's just because he hasn't really figured out smiling yet and concentrates really hard on everything he sees but he has such expressive eyebrows that make him look like such a grumpy old man sometimes :)

We have been so blessed by our amazing friends that have been bringing us meals during these last few weeks. I'm not even joking when I say that we are surviving solely on the food they've given us - without it, we would probably be eating frozen pizza or cold cereal for every meal. I've said it before and I'll say it again: It truly takes a village.

Cullen's cute hair has started to thin out and his hairline now recedes dramatically while the hair on the sides
continues to grow. He pretty much looks like he's balding :)

My brown-eyed boy

"A portrait of my Avery, once a week, every week, in 2014"

Just when we thought Avery was over his little cold, he woke up on Wednesday morning with his first stomach bug (complete with projectile vomiting at random and inopportune times). Oddly enough, besides the throwing up (which was heartbreaking to watch), he was in great spirits. A little cuddly at times but still the happy, energetic boy that I know and love. Thankfully, the sickness only lasted a day and now he's back to eating and drinking normally and unfortunately, mom gets a turn at the sickness... We've been laying low for a few days and have spent lots of time watching Sesame Street, reading books, and building blanket forts to hide from Bella.

At last count, Avery has cut through all four of his incisor teeth and his bottom 2-year molars are completely in (I haven't been able to spot the top ones yet but those could be in too) That means that since Cullen has been born, he's been doing nothing but teething (and being sick)- What a trooper!

Earlier in the week, Avery was able to have all kinds of adventures outside with dad on the warmer afternoons. He went 'hiking' with Max, got buried in sand down by the river, and got up close and personal with the big equipment that's scattered around the neighborhood. (Construction season is upon us, which is great that Avery gets to watch but not so great that they always seem to make the most noise during naptime...)
